The Diyarbakir Chief Public Prosecutor's
Office yesterday launched an investigation
into Sur Mayor Abdullah Demirbas who
commissioned a Kurdish language version of a
widely used computer program. First launched
some time ago and covered by media, the
software is a Kurdish version of the Ubuntu
Linux distribution. The program's name comes
from the Zulu and Xhosa concept of ubuntu,
which means "humanity towards others." This
first Linux-based Kurdish software was
presented in English by American software
specialist Rainer Heider at a ceremony
organized by the Sur Municipality, with
Heider's explanations translated into
Kurdish. It was stated at the ceremony that
all correspondence could be done in Kurdish.
Delivering a speech at the ceremony, Mayor
Demirbas described multilingualism as a
treasure. Advocating autonomous municipal
services in every language, including
Kurdish, Demirbas faced one to three years
in prison for a speech he delivered earlier
in the year in Vienna, Austria.
